The COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant negative impact on the nation’s economy, including the sportfishing industry. Any and all forms of relief are needed, which is why the American Sportfishing Association recently asked the US Treasury Department for a 90 day delay in the payment due date for the federal excise tax (FET) on sportfishing equipment.
The Treasury Department has our request, but with so much going on right now, we need Congress to weigh in to help ensure the request gets the attention it deserves.
The sportfishing industry supports the FET, recognizing that it is put to good use to benefit fisheries conservation and access. However, delaying the FET payment is needed to support struggling businesses whose revenues have taken a significant hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
