STAND UP FOR SWORDFISH AND SALMON
Your Senator is a key member of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee and they need to hear from you regarding two bills important to fisheries conservation that will be voted on by the Committee on August 1.
While banned throughout the rest of the country, large mesh drift gillnets used off the coast of California are responsible for a tremendous amount of bycatch of sportfish such as billfish and tuna, as well as a wide range of other marine life. The Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act would phase out the use of these indiscriminate mile-long nets and ensure that all U.S. waters are free of this highly destructive fishing gear.
The Senate Commerce Committee will also consider the Endangered Salmon Predation Prevention Act. This bill would give state and tribal fisheries managers better tools to protect threatened salmon and sturgeon in the Columbia River and its tributaries where sea lions have left the ocean to gorge on salmon. This new threat to an already struggling fishery may not be overcome without the reasonable control measures provided in this bill.
Take action today and tell your Senator to vote YES on these two important bills.
